Warming Up a New Account

The need to “warm up” new accounts is a controversial topic, as there’s no solid evidence of its effectiveness. In many cases, you can create a new account, start posting content right away, and get reach. In other cases, a new account may end up shadowbanned.

Both we and the bloggers we interviewed believe that “warming up” does have a positive effect. At the very least, it reduces the risk of being blocked.

To make sure your new account doesn’t look suspicious to TikTok’s algorithms and gets a good start for organic growth, we recommend following these rules:

  • Start your activity by engaging with other users’ content. Watch videos, like the ones you enjoy, and follow interesting profiles in your niche.
  • During the warm-up phase, set up your bio, add an avatar, and check out the content of users who have succeeded in your areas of interest. The search function will help you find content on TikTok. It also suggests queries to help you discover content. The main thing is to act like a real user so TikTok has no reason to suspect you’re a spam bot.
  • Spend at least a little time each day in the “For You” section (FYP). You’ll see how TikTok’s recommendation system personalizes content in this section based on your interests, location, and language settings. The system will also suggest popular creators to follow. By liking, sharing, bookmarking, and commenting on videos, you’ll see more similar content in the future. To see less of what you don’t like, use the “Not Interested” feature. If you think the content is completely irrelevant, use the “Reset Recommendations” feature to start fresh.
  • Pay attention to content in the “Friends” tab, as well as the “Following” and “Live” feeds. TikTok’s goal is to recommend content you already like and introduce you to new, diverse content, creators, and ideas. If you run out of content in the “Friends” or “Following” feeds, you’ll always find new and interesting posts in the “For You” feed.

After about 3–7 days, you can finish the “warm-up” and start posting content. In the beginning, to avoid your account being restricted for any reason, we recommend not posting more than one video per day.
